Surgical instruments are obviously made from stainless steel. However, the quality of single-use instruments and reusable instruments may vary. In our view, every distributor must know which quality material is being used to manufacture their instruments.AISI(American Iron and Steel Institute) set the standards of steel i.e. which grade of stainless steel should be used to make different medical devices. There are grades like AISI grades 304,316,410 and 420 etc. Stainless steel of different grades is used in crafting different types of surgical instruments.
In this article, I'll explain 2-3 general points about the grading system of stainless steel. These are as follows:
- What is Stainless Steel?
- Commonly used Grade of Stainless Steel.
- Testing of Steel.
What is Stainless Steel?
As the name suggests, steel must be made of iron. Yes, it is but along with iron, other elements are mixed with iron to make a composited material called stainless steel. Its composition consists of :
- Iron ore
- Chromium
- Nickle
- Carbon
Commonly used Grade of Stainless Steel
In short, AISI 410 is used for single-use non-cutting instruments while AISI 420 is used for cutting single-use instruments as 420 is much stronger than 410. While grade 304 is more corrosion-resistive, is used in making quality surgical instruments like hollow-ware and gynecology instruments. Testing of Steel
After molding and crafting the stainless steel into the instruments, different testing and inspection procedures are applied to ensure the quality, functionality, and durability of the instruments. These tests include passivation test, boiling test, hardness checking and then cleaning is done on instruments.
